The long view

The role lasts, because redesigning workflows for AI is ongoing. Whatever gets designed now will be rebuilt as capabilities grow, and rebuilt again after that.

Strong technical deployment practices at the major AI vendors say nothing against more capable systems arriving. Companies have to use AI now. Anyone who waits to redesign their workflows will likely be gone before those systems land, and the redesign done now has to be led by people.

More capable AI will keep the offices full. The economy expands as new needs appear, new companies form to serve them, and every one of them needs its workflows designed. Human desires keep growing, and the work grows with them.

Two things stay human. Agency: pushing a project forward takes drive and impatience. Persuasion: getting other people to agree takes presence, someone in the room who can look leaders in the eye and say this is the move. For a while yet, the field research described here reads better done by people, since a person notices what a survey misses. Later, workers may not mind a machine observer, and some may prefer one, since a mistake in front of an AI carries less sting than a mistake in front of a colleague.

Where the value goes

The era of theoretical AI is over. The lucrative, gritty era of operational deployment has begun. The risk in that shift is using new technology to optimize the old shape of the work. Throw strong engineers and good models at clunky legacy workflows and you get isolated 40% gains that dissolve in the friction of a human-shaped system, and a rare opening goes to waste.

The potential opens up through blank-slate redesign: treating the business as a set of outcomes to reach in new ways and retiring the structures built around human limits. That work takes a practitioner who can hold human psychology, service systems, and frontier technology at once. As AI takes over task completion, design value moves to the control loops around it: authority, accountability, incentives, and drift. That is where forward deployed design does its work.
